Gastown F.C. 0 (a.e.t.) 3 Surrey United 'B'

Gastown FC have mixed emotions for Memorial South Turf

The dream of an historic league and cup double is over for The Iron after they crashed out of the VMSL Cup last Wednesday evening against a youthful and energetic Surrey United B outfit. The way in which GFC exited the competition will have left a bitter taste in their mouths, as they were the better side from start to finish. An inability to create real clear-cut chances was emphasised by the lack of composure in front of goal. Combined with a handful of individual errors, Gastown were dumped out of the cup by a bizarre three-goal margin, after extra-time.

Newswire Gastown FC's season came to an end as they crashed out of the VMSL Cup at the hands of Surrey United on Wednesday evening. An evenly contested match, Gastown FC come away with a bitter taste in their mouths as it was one they should have won. Irish talisman Mick O'Sullivan had a late penalty saved which sent the tie to extra time at 0-0. Looking destined for penalties, the match was decided on a long ball which keeper Whelan mis-controlled allowing an open net for the Surrey man to slot into. This took the wind out of the Gastown sails as they conceded not one but two late penalties as they pressed for an equalizer. Despite the disheartening loss, spirit in the Gastown camp remains high after an excellent first season as an amalgamated club that saw them crowned league champions.

Newswire The Iron's VMSL Cup quaterfinal tie was a washout thanks to the 'Pineapple Express' weather system having moved in from Hawaii. The precipitation means that the match will be delayed until later this weekend at the earliest. Keep your ears to the ground for updates. #ForzaGFC.

No Més

Barcelona is finished. Fold the club. In their two most recent high profile contests, they lost by a combined score of 5-1. They looked sloppy, out of sync, and careless with the ball. They lacked rhythm. The Jazz Age is giving way to the Great Depression. Disband the team. Let the robber barons carve up the roster and haul off the pieces to each of the four corners of the football empire like the body of William Wallace – a warning to any who dare blaspheme and believe their football superior or sacred. Iniesta to Russia. Alves to China. Puyol to Dubai. Messi to the A-League. The sight of a slightly out of shape Leo Messi toiling joylessly in a mid-season tilt against the Central Coast Mariners certainly will deter anyone from ever again challenging the football gods. Xavi, ever the romantic, undoubtedly will commit ritual suicide before ever enduring the shame of wearing the shirt of another. Sergi Busquets will flee to Pep Guardiola’s utopic wonderland, where he will live eternally in tika-taka bliss among the unicorns and Care Bears, a lost boy to Pep’s Peter Pan.

Cosmos SC 0 - 2 Gastown F.C.

The Iron is a team that tries not to underestimate opponents. After all, they remember the midway point of their league campaign, when they were languishing in 6th place. Following a couple of decent results, a team can grow into a much more formidable force. This was the case with Cosmos SC. Following a disappointing league season in which they finished 6th in Division 3, Cosmos have been able to put together a cup run in which they have defeated quality opposition, from higher leagues, by convincing score lines (including a 6-0 shellacking of Bosna SC). Having beaten Cosmos 5-0 and 7-0 last year, The Iron kept their wits about them, remaining solid at the back and clinical in front of goal. Two second-half Ruprah strikes were enough to allow safe passage through to the quarterfinals.

Newswire There is nothing like the romance of cup competition. Cosmos SC of the 3rd division had toppled opposition from higher leagues in the first two rounds of the cup. Unfortunately for them, they came up against a well-organised Gastown FC, and the in-form Silvio Ruprah. The Iron saw off their lower league opponents with two second half goals from the Italo-Mexican. Robert Morrison also cleared two late corners from underneath the crossbar. GFC will play either Division 2's Unicorns FC, or CAT outfit Surrey Utd 'B' in the quarter-finals. Forza GFC.
