Lionel Messi's 2012 Records.

FIFA's creative techniques to level the playing field - forcing Messi to play in solid gold boots.

The Iron's crack-team of bloggers have been a bit busy recently, so hear is a story I found some time ago on The Guardian. I thought it was an eye-opening read, as some of the numbers are just mind-boggling. Thanks must go out to The Guardian Sports Blog for compiling the stats, and indeed @messistats on Twitter, from whom most of these stats were sourced. Sit back, relax, and let the majesty of la pulga atomica wash over you.

Newswire: Gastown F.C. are going up - with a game to spare. Title challengers Dasmesh FC needed to win both of their remaining games in order to put the pressure on G.F.C. to win their final game at Meraloma. The do or die scenario is now moot for The Iron as Dasmesh fell to Euro Hurricanes this afternoon at Point Grey leaving them four points back of Gastown with only one game left on the schedule. Earlier in the day, Gastown thrashed a shorthanded WS Musqueam FC squad by a score of 8-3 with hat-tricks from both Ruprah and Keller. A fantastic day all around for the Gastown Massive.

Green Devils 1 - 2 Gastown F.C.

A soggy but sunny Memorial Park played host to Gastown's eigth consecutive win

Run to the hills, the levees have been breached! After seven consecutive clean sheets, The Iron have conceded a goal. In a title chase that is going down to the wire, Gastown were left to hang on with only ten men and a slender advantage against a stubborn Green Devils side. Requiring a win to keep the pressure on second placed Dasmesh Tigers, GFC were able to hold on for an eighth consecutive win and remain top of the table with a single game remaining, despite a surface that required crampons rather than football boots.

Harry Redknapp's dream job.

An 'Arry in his natural 'abitat.

This must be the perfect job for 'appy 'Arry. Not only 'as the ol' mucka being given 'alf of Liberia's deficit so that he can buy every player on the face of the planet, he is also the guv'nah of a club that was rock bottom when he started. Its the old 'Arry Redknapp: "They only 'ad X points when I joined." We heard it at Spurs after Juande Ramos' hilarious tenure, now we're going to have it all over again. You may be wondering where I am going with all of this, and to be honest, I ain't got a Scooby. I just wanted an excuse to shoe-horn this .gif onto our wind and kite, because it is the best thing I have seen in a long time. Check it out after the jump.

Newswire: A disappointing performance from the CAT side on Friday night was quickly forgotten this afternoon as the Div 2 side strengthened their grip on first place after surviving a tense encounter against Green Devils FC. A 2-0 second half lead courtesy of Will Meredith and Mick O'Sullivan seemed comfortable before Jack Whelan was sent off. The Iron defenses were breached for the first time in eight games when Connor Keller couldn't keep out the ensuing penalty. Gastown were able to hang on for a 2-1 win despite being down to 10 men. A Rino's Fury victory over Dasmesh on Sunday will hand the Iron the Div 2C league title and promotion.

Rino's Fury 0 - 3 Gastown F.C.

Greg Smith was a thorn in the Rino's side, marking his debut with 2 goals.

It seems to have been a long time since I wrote a report for a GFC match. Since then, I hope you have had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The Iron owe enormous thanks to Anthony Sterne for playing in a crucial match against Ladner on the 4th of January. He was able to ensure The Iron kept a 6th successive clean sheet and victory - keeping their title hopes alive - deputising superbly for the absent Whelan and Mironov. This Sunday saw GFC looking to build on their formidable run against top of the pile Rino’s Fury. The boys from the Downtown Eastside knew that a victory would put them in first place with a game in hand on a Rino’s outfit that has been leading from the front since the very start of the season.

Newswire: To the top go the Iron. A 3-0 win over title-chasing rivals Rinos Fury puts Gastown FC at the head of the standings with two games to go in the campaign. A win against Green Devils FC at the weekend, coupled with a Dasmesh loss to Rinos will give the Iron the Div 2 title at the first time of asking. This weekend's win came courtesy of two opening half goals from new signing Gregory Smith before Mick O'Sullivan capped off a beautiful passing move between Smith and Owen Parrott. The CAT side was unable to take to the field as their match was cancelled due to the need to rest players for the Rinos clash.

Still got it...

Zizou on his 'weaker' left foot. Hans-Jörg Butt may disagree...

Almost a year ago to the day, I started a little series of 'Still Got It.' We would focus on ex-players that the GFC team like that are still doing awesome things, despite getting a little bit older. Dennis Bergkamp was our first feature, as not only is he the most cultured man of all time, he continues to score absolute belters during Ajax training sessions - possibly whilst wearing quilted slippers. At the time, I think I said we would do one every week... it turns out that I got 3 out of 52. Could be worse. It is time to revive the series and take a look at one of the all time greats; His Holy Zizou, Zinedine Zidane.
