After a perfect start in perfect weather, it was fitting that a torrential downpour in downtown Vancouver would bring about a change in fortunes for The Iron. Robbed of some of their most impactful players due to injuries, jobs and social fluttering, Gastown FC were ultimately satisfied despite dropping points against a struggling HalfMan HalfFish. Another early set-back meant life was always going to be difficult for a Gastown side that lacked its usual creative spark. With Manchester City clinching the title in the most dramatic of fashions, I was prompted to take a look down some of the great last minute goals that have decided many an incredibly exciting game. There is - of course - the Dennis Bergkamp goal against Argentina mentioned last week, which probably takes the biscuit as far as stylish last minute goals are concerned. As much as I'd like to show it again, here we'll have a look through many other an exciting finish.

F.C. Another beautiful evening in Vancouver, another convincing Gastown FC victory. This time the victims were the mostly Japanese collective of FC All In One (AIO). After getting misty eyed over the departures of Japanese starlets Takafumi Ogasahara and Shimpei Tsukaji, back to their native Kochi, The Iron dedicated the win to them. Despite conceding an early opening goal, the result was never in doubt, as superior pace on the flanks and a superb range of passing was too much for FC AIO to handle. In light of the European Championships beckoning in just over a month, I couldn't resist taking time to look back at one of the greats of European Championships past. On a beautiful day in southern Burnaby, BC, Gastown FC began the defence of their summer UltraSoccerLeague Division 1 crown. Under vibrant blue skies and relentless sun, the temperature on the pitch pushed the mercury up to 100. Nevertheless, a new-look international Gastown squad were able to put the Greencaps to the sword in brutal fashion, despite reports that this was the side that was supposedly going to be the main threat for the league title. The Iron looked adept going forward with pace and width, whilst remaining tighter at the back than euphemistic metaphor.

Ultra soccer league - Summer 2012 - matchday 1

After a first week bye, Gastown F.C. kick off their 2012 Summer season this Sunday in the depths of Burnaby at Byrne Creek Secondary School. G.F.C. will look to bounce back from a disappointing Fall campaign which started brightly but fizzled out. Getting off to winning ways will prove be a tough task though as they open the season against the Fall Ultra League Champions Vancouver Greencaps F.C. who not only went unbeaten last term but also failed to drop a point.

Yes he's a pesky little racist, and yes he's often one of the most infuriating players to watch, and no I'm still not sure whether I'm glad that he's wearing my favourite red shirt or not. He is a damn good player though as Kenny Dalglish mentioned in his post-match praise after his three goals had seen off Norwich over the weekend. If you were to browse through the VMSL results list from last season, you would see that Gastown FC's results tailed off towards the end, culminating in a 7-2 loss at the hands a of a youthful and sprightly NorVan Saints XI. As results had started to go against The Iron (and the snow fell heavily in Whistler), we found ourselves understaffed. A spirited 0-0 with UBC was fought despite having 10 men, however facing NorVan with 8 was a bridge too far. This past weekend at Villa Park, the formerly mighty claret and blue failed to win a game for the 6th time in a row. While it wasn't much of a footballing feast (it ended 0-0 against Sunderland) hungry fans were be able to snack on a brand new meat pie in support of Stylian Petrov. The Villa club captain is currently dealing with a bout of cancer knack and part of the proceeds of the leek, chicken and Bulgarian kafka meatball pie are going to the Cure Leukaemia organization. In honor of Villa's excellent fundraising campaign, we thought it a good time for a quick reminder of some of our favourite footballers whose charity output would rival Princess Diana's if it were based solely on pie eating.

The White Feather

It's been well over a decade since Fabrizio Ravanelli banged in a hat-trick on his debut in England's top flight against my beloved Liverpool. He wasn't the best player to play the game, but he was one of those quality players on pretty mediocre teams ('Boro, Derby) which is why I always liked him. Whenever I see someone reel away from goal with their shirt over their head in celebration it sparks a bit of fond nostalgia for the silver-fox in the box. Which is why I just had to splurge the $5 on this fantastic shirt at Value Village not so long ago. An ode to his glory years at Juventus, the design of it as mental as the Old Lady's ultras.
